PRIMARY EMOTIONS

EMOTIONS HAVE A REASON TO BE
Our society encourages us to express some emotion and suppress others in order to be accepted.
Emotions are neither good nor bad, the purpose is to fulfill our needs.
The primary emotions are Joy, Love, Anger, Sadness and Fear because have been experienced by all. Studies have contended that primary emotions can be quantified because all humans employ the same facial muscles when expressing a particular emotion, so it goes beyond culture, language or beliefs, therefore are universal.
If those emotions are universal also have a reason to be in our lives:
  • Fear is a survival mechanism that is a reaction to some negative stimulus. It helps us to respond to some danger that is about to happen. When you put a finger near to a fire the immediate response is to move it right away, but if fear turns into a panic this one can paralyse us.
  • Joy or happiness has shades of enjoyment, satisfaction and pleasure. There is a sense of well-being, safety and contentment. There is an existence of both, positive thinking and positive activities and help us to recharge our energy.
  • Love arises from a feeling of profound oneness. Love can be platonic, romantic, religious or familial. Love makes us feel close to others and build up on self-esteem.
  • Sadness is experience as a lonely because requires diving into the self, but also brings people together because is easier to rely on each other. Help us to re evaluate a situation, learn from it and then move on.
  • Anger is a way to set up boundaries, which are necessary to protect our physical and mental health. Requires a lot of energy to face situations and make decisions.
To fulfil our needs is important to identify, accept, express and release the emotions to carry on.
